Wow! John Glenn is a community service school by nature of International Baccalaureate. There is no more perfect compliment to getting involved in "Community and Service" than to join Rotary Youth-Interact. ROTARY INTERNATIONAL is the adult version of this international service organization. There are millions of Rotarians located throughout the world, and Ms. Graham is one of them. Rotary, at all the age group levels, provides service to the community, the area or region, and then to the world.
Yes, the world! Rotary International has almost completely wiped out the disease of Polio in 3rd world countries. Currently world-wide projects include providing clean water for villages in South and Central America, Africa, India, and many more countries. Additionally, Rotary is focusing on literacy, yep, reading and writing.
Local Projects: We constantly look for ways to raise funds. This year be on the lookout for our Flamingo Flock nesting in neighborhood yards. We have JGMS Redhawk rocks for sale, T-shirts, and jump drives. We are available for school beautification.
Community Projects: John Glenn Rotary Youth-Interactact turn out yearly to serve and prepare pancakes for the Palm Desert Rotary Pancake Breakfast at the Golf Cart Parade, this year Sunday Oct. 28th. Kids love the service with the public.
We will also help with the Galilee Food Center distribution at least once a month this year.
International Projects: A focus this year will be the empowerment of Muslin women in Egyptian villages. Contact has been made with the Singer Corporation to help our club supply village women with sewing machines to make clothing for their families and to earn money without leaving the home.
Past projects have been the collection of sewing machines for Hondurus villages, monetary help for Haitian flood victims, milk and wool animals for Heifer International, contributions to build school for the Central Asia Institute.
The best of all is awaiting the 6th and 7th graders. There is a weekend P.R.Y.D.E. Leadership camp for selected boys and girls held in May. You will learn how to help crisis situations, create consensus, and develop skills to become a future leader. See Ms. Graham for details.
Besides meeting new friends and learning leadership skills, P.R.Y.D.E. campers meet community leaders from two counties. This is a great start to building resume connections!
