Meet the Teachers

Mrs. Housken

Hi, I am Kristine Housken.  I have been a part of the Washington Charter School family for almost six years now!  As you will learn, we are a very close knit team that prides ourselves on collaboration.  It has definitely been a labor of love creating our “new and improved” kindergarten program! Teaching kindergarten has become a love of mine, as I am truly amazed by the growth students achieve in one year!  Our students are absolutely one of a kind, as is our incredibly supportive parent base.

Before Washington Charter, I taught 2nd grade and kindergarten at Roosevelt Elementary in Indio, CA.  I grew up in Del Mar, CA and moved to the desert after college.  I received my B.A. and my credential at Cal Poly Pomona.  I recently earned my administrative credential and my Masters in Education Administration from Cal State San Bernardino.

My husband and I just welcomed our baby girl, Tessa in April!  We are having a blast watching her grow everyday! A few things I enjoy are reading, playing with my two dogs Caddy and Penny, coffee, doing DIY projects around the house and spending quality time with family and friends.

Miss Blakey

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year!  I am so excited to have your child in my class!

For those of you who do not know me, this is my eighth year teaching here at WCS.  I am originally from West Salem, Wisconsin (Go Pack Go)!  I moved to California in 1997 and earned my undergraduate, bachelor's and master's degrees from Chapman University.

I have two children of my own; Isaiah, who is a sophomore at Palm Desert High School, and Savannah, who is a fifth grader here at WCS.

I absolutely love being a part of Washington Charter School and welcome each and every one of you to this very special family.

I am looking forward to watching your child grow academically, as well as socially and emotionally.  We are going to have a fantastic year!

Mrs. Swartz

Hi, I am Julia Swartz. This will be my 5th year teaching at Washington Charter and my 9th year teaching in Desert Sands Unified School District.  I grew up in northern California in the Bay Area (GO NINERS!!).  I received my bachelors degree at Chico State, my teaching credential at Cal State East Bay, and a GATE certificate at UC Riverside.

I moved down to the desert after I got my teaching credential in 2006. I have taught kindergarten at Truman and Roosevelt Elementary Schools. I live with my husband in La Quinta, along with our two dogs and cat. In my free time, I enjoy reading, being outdoors, playing with our dogs Jordan and Lollie, and spending quality time with my friends and family. I am SOO excited for another exciting year at Washington Charter and a new chapter teaching Transitional Kindergarten!!

Mrs. Santos

Hi, I’m Katy Santos! This will be my third year teaching at WCS! I taught Transitional Kindergarten for two years and am now going to teach Kindergarten! I grew up in the desert and attended WCS for elementary school. I went to the University of Oregon (Go Ducks!) and the University of Redlands, where I received my bachelor’s degree and teaching credential. I also have a Bilingual Authorization in Spanish.

I got married over the summer and am enjoying being a newlywed with my husband Jose! In my free time I enjoy reading, spending time with family and friends and going to the movies.

I am so excited for the upcoming school year!
