Indio Middle School is proud to add a Pre-Med Health Academy to our curriculum. We are now a Magnet School and received special funding in the form of a federal grant.

Indio Middle School is committed to providing a three year, seamless, curricular program that brings health careers to life. Our students will experience a rigorous introduction to the occupations of medicine.  Each child will have the opportunity to master medical terminology, become certified in First Aid and CPR, become adept at the skills and tools used in the medical field today, and be capable of making choices affecting the future of their own lives as well as the lives in the community.

 

OUR PRE-MED ACADEMY

Sixth Grade – focus on basic health, medical terminology, and body systems (human anatomy).

Seventh Grade - focus on health occupations, qualifications, specific skills used in the medical field, First Aid and CPR certification, and job specifics (who does what and how).

Eighth Grade – focus on employment skills, job shadowing where students will spend time with health professionals, and mastery of medical terminology and disease systems.

In addition, all students will receive week-long lessons on specific careers during each quarter of their three years at Indio Middle. These week-long units are driven by specific careers for each grade level and are tied directly to state standards for each content area.

These units include a focus on the following career areas: Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Phlebotomy, Radiology Technicians, Optometry, Sports Medicine, Medical Doctors, Veterinarians, Chiropractors, Mental Health, Nutrition, Research and Ethics, Mortuary Services, Billing and Insurance, Hospice, and many, many more.
