DEBATE, and the art of Persuasive Writing.

The art of making effective arguments is a life long skill. The students are required throughout the whole year to provide evidance from the text, the story, articles, or research in order to make their "telling points". The term "telling points" is introduced in the first core literature novel the students read, entitled My Brother Sam is Dead, by the Collier Brothers. In the Spring the classes get into Persuasive Writing via debates on controversial issues. Each individual in a group of six, must know and be able to defend both sides of the issue with facts, not emotion. The Persuasive Essay is one of 6 major 300 - 500 word essays required in the 6th grade.
For class debate purposes a presentation rubric is found below.  All audience members will evaluate debate teams based on the listed criteria.
