Yes, this is quite a bit at one time, but "we are wasting daylight" and must be ready to go!

Starry Knights Productions, Spring Play, "Twelfth Night", by William Shakespeare

Performances are Wed- Sat, March 24 through 28, 2011, in the big theatre. Auditions are next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 11, 12 and 13, from 3 to 5 PM.

Here's what you need to know in order to be happy and organized.

1.   Our monologue competition is also the Thursday of competitions. You can do both things at once. If you are interested in a speaking part for "Twelfth Night", use the monologue you have prepared for that. If you would like to come to the Tuesday or Wednesday auditions to practice for the competition, now that's good thinking!

2.   We are not able to go to Chapman this year. Scholarship and college career steps are stressed for this competition and would be better served by taking seniors and juniors next year. So, plan to compete in our Monologue competition next week. There will be prizes.

3.   Rehearsals for "Twelfth Night" will be Tuesday, Wednesday( as needed for fencing rehearsals) and Thursday until the middle of March. Check to see if you are available after school from 3 to 6 PM.

4.   You do not need to audition for our show in order to compete in the monologue competition. The 2 grand finalists will represent us at English Speaking Union on Friday, February 18th at College of the Desert. But there will be many more prizes.

5.   If you wish to audition, fill out a form and read the play. No experience? Now's the time.

Confused? Don't be! Please contact Ms Deady for monologues, information or to come by for a cup of tea.

Transfer Applications to Shadow Hills High School now available for the 2011 2012 school year.

 

Beginning November 1, 2010 through April 1, 2011 the office of Child Welfare and Attendance will begin taking Intra and Inter District transfer applications for the 2011-2012 school year. You may pick up an application in the office of Child Welfare and Attendance located at 47950 Dune Palms Rd. in La Quinta. Applications are also available on line by going into the Desert Sands Unified School District web site under Child Welfare and Attendance documents.

Transfers are allowed in Desert Sands per Board of Education policy, and are based on space and program availability. For schools whose capacity will not allow for the number of applications made, an unbiased lottery process is made to fill available spots for applications that have been submitted on or before April 1, 2011. Two lotteries will be conducted: One will be for Intra-District transfers, and one for Inter-District transfers. Applicants who are not chosen are placed on a waiting list in the order established by the lottery in case more spots open up at a later date. Parents will be notified by mail as to whether or not they were selected by May 31, 2011.

SHHS Robotics Club

Shadow Hills High School will be participating in the 2011 season of the FIRST Robotics competition. FIRST stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology".  At the Kickoff in January the students will see the challenge for this year and begin to design their robot.  In just six weeks, we will join teams from around the world to compete in regional events.  The robots will be judged on design, innovation, culture changing behavior and performance.

This fall we will be recruiting members, attending workshops and learning all we can about robots before the Kickoff in January.  On the left you'll find links to the various aspects of the club.  Please contact the Advisor, Kate Keener with questions or suggestions.  We are looking forward to a fun experience!

Wanted: Shadow Hills High School Male and Female Actors. Experience is not necessary. This year's fall show in our theatre will be a mysterious comedy about the original Jack o lantern of early American folklore.

 

Show Dates: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 3rd through 6th.

 

Questions? See Ms Deady in the Theatre for an audition packet or for any other questions you might have.

 

How: Come to auditions on Wednesday or Thursday, you choose what day you would like. We will let you know before you leave that day if we can offer you a part. Please check rehearsal and performance dates before you decide to be in the show.

 

What do you need for auditions? Please fill out the forms in the audition packet and come to auditions ready to play. It's fun for all.

 

Interested in Production Team Positions? See Ms Deady, we have all kinds of parts available, some more messy and spooky than others. Seriously, if you are looking for something different, this may be your ticket to Theatre.

 

8/30/10 > ID Requirements

 

Student ID Requirement:

Due to our focus on schoolwide safety, beginning next Monday (May 3rd ), students without  proper SHHS IDs will be held outside the school grounds until the school starts.  Student options will be:

1) Ask parents to bring ID.  

2) Purchase new ID and or Lanyard from ASB at the cost of $5 for each piece.

3) Be assigned to OCS for the day. 

Torn, destroyed, or damaged IDs must be replaced. We can no longer issue paper temporary IDs due to costs and time.  Students found not wearing their IDs during the day may be escorted to OCS.  Not wearing IDs on campus is considered defiance and is subject to discipline.

During the first three morning sessions of Band Camp (8:00 -11:30 a.m.) we will focus on basic marching techniques outside while the weather is cooler. The afternoon sessions (12:30 - 4:00 p.m.) will be devoted to music in an indoor environment. The inside-outside schedule for the last two days of camp will depend on weather conditions. I will try and hold outdoor sessions when things are cooler. Students should plan on providing own their food for lunch and dinner breaks. It is possible for parents to pick up students and take them out for meals, but a better idea might be delivering their meals to them. There are no fast food places close to the SHHS campus.

School for Scoundrels- the Making of LSH, (Legend of Sleepy Hollow) or, "So you want to be in the Fall Show" and get a leg up on your fall audition?

 

This year's Theatre Boot Camp will be all about the fall show, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", This is for students who want to perform, (act, sing, stage combat, and dance), as well as the student who is interested in production and management.  Session includes:

 

1. Character study for audition preparation- We challenge you to a game of "Stand and Deliver",

2. Music and movement of the 1790s. No kidding, they sang and danced before they had electricity? Blind Man's Bluff, what is that?

3. Come on down, Techies! Ever build a tree? Learn the secrets of painting for black light. You know you want to be among the famous who know how to rig the running, I mean, run the rigging!

4. Shadow puppets. No kidding. Ancient Asian art form, coming to Starry Knights Productions

"Heads will fly", or so we hope.

 

Tuesday, August 24th from 3 to 8 PM and Wednesday, August 25th from 3 to 8 PM - Open house from 7 to 8 PM in the Performing Arts Center, it's air conditioned! Your families are more than welcome!

 

 

Question: Do you need to be experienced in theatre? 

Answer: No! Our answer to that is, "Come on down." Don't know anyone? You will now, and before the 1st day of school.

 

Question: What else do I need to know?  

Answer: The cost is $20 for two days, which covers the cost of materials for your very own shadow puppet or mask and the cost of dinner each night, (served about 5:30PM). Please wear comfortable clothing that you can get dirty and bring closed toed shoes. Safety!

 

Ladies bring snacks, chips, cookies, or candy to share with your cast mates, Gentleman bring drinks, water, soda, etc to share with your cast mates.

 

Question: How do I sign up?

Go to the Shadow Hills High School Webstore located on the SHHS website, www.shadowhillshs.com and click on Webstore, pay your fees of $20 - or bring a check to the school to pay your fees in advance. Make sure you fill out this form and email it to Ms. Deady or fax it to the school at 760-393-5402 prior to the beginning of boot camp!

Books returned must be free of any marks, writing, damage, etc. Once returned the book becomes the property of the school and can be resold at the current price. Any refunds will be issued in the form of a check from the district office in La Quinta. NO CASH REFUNDS!

Exchanges can be made for minor flaws provided there is no writing in the book. The exception is if the adviser feels that the book is the flaw of the publisher, i.e. missing pages, upside down, etc. In that case the book will be replaced, regardless of signatures.

It will be the responsibility of the buyer to provide proof of a purchase in the form of a receipt of a cashed check. Only a valid blue bear receipt or a cancelled check will suffice as proof of payment.

Shadow Hills High School will be represented at this year's English Speaking Union competition at Collage of the Desert on February 11 by the students who won our competition, held this saturday. We had 14 students compete with Shakespearian monologues who were judged by collage students from out of the area.
Our winners are:
1. Taylor Cerny, who will perform a monologue from "Macbeth"
2. Scott Hancock, Who will perform a monologue from "Much Ado About Nothing"
3. Our alternate is: Madison Maler, who will perform a monologue from "Romeo and Juliet", if our winners are unable to compete.

The winners of the ESU competition at College of the Desert win a trip to New York and $500.2nd prize is $300 and 3rd place is $200. We will compete with high schools from our area, who also bring 2 winners and an alternate.

As part of the California Career Education Act (CTE), this program will be availiable to this years Freshmen.  By following a sequence of courses starting in their sophomore year students will be able to obtain real on the job experience as interns in various golf course communities when they become seniors.

10/21/09 > Technology is our Friend

One of the very fun elective classes that we have here at Shadow Hills is Digital Technology. This class is taught by Mr. Craig Taylor, who calls himself a digital arts and media production teacher. Mr. Taylor has taught in Desert Sands for fourteen years, and in that tenture has tauht at La Quinta Middle School, Palm Desert High School and one year at La Quinta High School. Now this year he is now teachin full time at Shadow Hills High School. Mr. Taylor interviewed for the postion in February and he found out he got the job shortly thereafter. From the day he got hired he was hard at work making sure that he was ready to greet his students. Some of the fun projects that he had planned for this year is a bi-weekly new repot, a documentary on the Palm Oasis resort, Knight animations, and each student will be doing a personal interview video that covers their first year of school.

Mr. Taylor is a dynamic teacher who has a very quick wit and keeps his class fun and engaged by never stopping "playing" with the students. On the personal side he is married and had one son who is graduating from La Quinta High School in June of this year. His wife Jennifer Taylor is also a paraeducator who works at John Glenn so this is a family that knows and is committed to Desert Sands Unified School District. One of his favorite memories about Desert Sands is "He can remember the first time Indio High School was closed because it snowed!" Yes it snowed! Mr. Taylor was in the desert and graduated from Indio High School in 1980.

Mr. Taylor loves the energy around the students and he actually learns from the students mistakes when they make mistakes. He consistently leanrs from his students, which sounds silly but it's true. His biggeset pet peeave is people's general lack of courtesy for each other. Mr. Taylor loves that most students have a sense of wonder which means that things are new. He likes Shadow Hills High School because he likes having the oppotunity for a fresh start. One of Mr. Taylor's favorite quote is "You have to have a destination in mind for any trip" That quote means that students have to have a goal in order to succeed. So take Mr. Taylor's advice to heart and make sure that you set some goal and go for them.

We are so lucky to have a great librarian, Melinda Delgado. I got the privilege of interviewing her, and concluded that she is very nice and down to earth. She used to work at Jefferson Middle as a librarian, when she got offered the position and promotion here at SHHS she jumped on it. I asked her how working at our school compared to Jefferson and she replied there was NO comparison.

 This school is AWESOME with great staff and students, and brand new books and equipment. She absolutely loves working here! She said "Its good to come to work at a place where you're accepted, comfortable, and excited to work. There are different things to do everyday!" When asked what made herwant to become a librarian she said that when she was working as a T.A she saw the need for nice and caring librarians in schools today.

 Her goals for the library are that by the end of the school year, students would have experienced and read books that could broadn there interested and knowledge. She also wants to know that she did a good job serving the staff,students and the community. She stated" I hope as we grow as a high school, reading will be the top of students list along with sports, art music and any beneficial extra curriculer activities! The library is open everyday at 7:30 and stays open till 3pm.

 Miss Delgado is always there if you need her and especially if you have a research question or if you need some help on a project for a class she is there for you as a valuable resource. Miss Delgado also wants to start a book club at lunch so if you have a book that you are fond of stop by the library and let he know so she can make sure that she has copies of it in stock and ready to go.

Even though it isn't easy at all to start a team from scratch, money-wise or coaching-wise, Coach Shipley has a simple plan: "I'm going to start with the basics and practice every day and get them to learn the sport of football. " Coach Shipley chose his coaching staff by personal knowledge of their solidness and their willingness to give up their free time to help him coach. Joining him on the coaching staff is Frosh Head Coach, David Sterling: Defensive Coordinator, Teg Diffey: Line Coach, Doug Macleod: Defensive Bacs, Aaron Wiltrout: Frosh assistant, Ariel Gonzalez: Volunteer, George Ballard and Running Backs Coach James Toland.

As you can see it takes a lot of talented coaches to get this program up and running. Even though it was a new program and for a new school, a whopping seventy three student athletes tried out for and made either the Frosh or JV football team. The cost to join the teamwas a $75 spirit pack, a $20 ASB card and a lot of blood, sweat and tears. Sadly some kids quit, but the coaches quickly found replacements for them. Due to the fact that our school doesn't have a Varsity team until nextyear, the teams aren't in a league. The teams play whatever team that wants to play against them on their free time. Next year Coach Shipley had already signed us up for the DeAnza League and will be playing schools like Xavier, Big Bear, and Desert Hot Springs High School.

All in all, we are very lucky to have Coach Shipley and his talented staff. He has done a fantastic job with the football teams and we are looking forward to many more wonderful things from this Head Coach. If you missed your opportunity to play this year, then talk to Coach Shipley he will make sure to find a spot for you at next year's tryouts.

Hi, everyone! If you didn't know, I'm your ASB President. I along with my other executive board members, Miranda Moreno (VP) and Peter Garza (Treasurer), have been very busy since elections! We have much to do this year, and we are ready! On September 11 we had our very first dance! It was great! It was very fun and a great way to relax and pump up our football who played La Quinta the next day! Our football players have been improving steadily since their first games. I am looking forward to seeing them continue to improve throughout the year!

 On September 15, I as ASB president went to the district office to be sworn in as an official Student Board Member, Superintendant Dr. McGehee Swore me in and in doing so I had to recite the same oath as President Obama did. Also, just as Obama I accidently messed up t the end! At this meeting I had a vote in whether items were passed or not. There were so many things that I got a vote on; my vote is just as equal to the rest of the board's votes. There was one thing about being a Student Board Member that scared me; the Friday before the board meeting, a 4-inch binder, FULL of paper, was dropped at my doorstep. That binder is packed full of everything I need to know for the meeting. If you get the chance to see the binder, you will be amazed at its volume. The remaining two meetings I will be attending are on October 6 and 20 at 7 o' clock at the district office on Dune Palms Road and Avenue 48 in La Quinta! Hope To see You There!

We held our first official ASB meeting Wednesday, September 16. We discussed many things regarding anything and everything associated with SHHS. ASB will be very busy this year. Opening a new school is a lot of work, but we have the knowledge, skills, and dedication to get everything done. And everything will be done to high standards! If you have questions or comments regarding ASB or SHHS please talk to any ASB student! We have our ASB meetings every Wednesday in room D101 during fourth period.

Newcoming! Our theme this year is 80's! As any high school, we will have a court. We will have a king, Queen, Prince, and Princess. Our Newcoming game is November 12 and our dance will be November 13th at 7:30 pm in our gym. We will have spirit week, that week and a a lot of dress up days and other activities to show out Knight Pride. Show your SHHS spirit and participate in the activities that week!

Ninth grade class meetings are held every 3rd Tuesday of the month in the lecture hall. Come and find out what your class is doing. Your elected officers, Taylor Cerny (President), Justin Medina (VP) and Estephany Garcia (treasurer) will be at these meetings as well as your class advisor Ms. McGee. These meetings are all about the class of 2013. There are only ninety seats available in the lecture hall, so claim your spot! For Newcoming the class of 2013 has to put together a float, this will be discussed at the next meeting. Questions or comments please see your class advisor.

Tenth grade class meetings are held every 4th Tuesday of the month in the lecture hall. Come find out about the class of 2012, these meetings are for you! Your elected officers are Tierra Zachmann (presidents), Emily Gregory (VP), and Nicole Amador (Treasurer), your class advisor is Ms. Oberman. For Newcoming the class of 2012 has to make a float as well! Let's see who makes the better float, 2012 or 2013! Step up to the plate and help build your float! Got Marching Band?

  You may not always see them but you can always hear them. Yes, that's right we're talking about marching band. Marching band, from what I've gathered, is a cross between the military and regular band. You can find them roasting along with the rest of us at JV football games playing and supporting our team. "It's hard but it's worth it." Said Scott Hancock a ninth grader, "It's fun to perform." Just like a port marching band practices at least three after school, out in the heat. "I heard them practicing after school yesterday and I think they have a great future." Commented Ms. Deady, a theater and English teacher.

The marching band is directed by Mr. Bluto who taught at La Quinta last year. He had a great band and will do great things for our music department. "Mr. Bluto is a very nice person with lots of experience." Christian L azaro said. Marching and practices and performs with our color guard. Marching practice consists of you guesses it, lots of marching. There's also running, pushups, and other things that are not enjoyable. "I could never do marching band, I would die! It looks really hard." Sariena Callin, a ninth grader in color guard mentioned.

Though marching band has all the ease of army when asked David Lopez, a ninth grader who plays the mellophone, said he would return next year. For all of you who think marching band is easy try running around the field for an hour blowing into a 50 pound susaphone. We dare you, and then you can say you have been in our shoes. Leading our marching band this year is Mr. Bluto. After teaching at La Quinta High School for eight years Mr. Bluto, our talented band teacher aand chairman of the Performing Arts, decided to come and start a new program at our very own Shadow Hills. He says he is very excited to be working at a brand new school because he was looking for something different. "You need changer to grow as a person", he believes. When asked what his philosophy of music was as it relates to high school students was, he answered that he believes every student has a love for music in many ways.

 Being in a band or group teaches kids how to function with others and learn leadership skills. Mr. Bluto to is excited about the star of this brand new school and is curious to see how we grow over the years to come. Mr. David Hill is in charge of the color guard - he too came over with Mr. Bluto from La Qunita. We are lucky to have such fine talent. Shdaow Hills is sure to have the best marching band around as long as these two are at the helm.

Our football team has been practicing everyday after school. The team practices for two hours in the 100 degree weather with exceptions of game days and holidays. During practice the team works on hitting, defense, offense, and special teams (such as kick off, kick return, field goal, and hands team). At the end of practice the team does conditioning for 30 minutes.

Between the JV and Freshmen team there have been six games that have been played for each. The JV football team has fought hard, but lost to Notre Dame, La Quinta, and Los Osos. The Freshmen team has fought hard also, but lost agianst La Quinta and Indio. The Freshmen team also won their first game when they played Cochella Valley on September 24, the score was 20-14. They had a great running game and worked together to achieve this win.

Our coaches gave us great support and have taught us well. The excitement was in the air for our football team and for the people there to support our team. The Freshmen team was really surprised they won the game, Troy Martin tells us and not only that, but the Freshmen were the first to win a game and make SHHS history!

Now that we have had several home games it is time to hit the road for the Knights. Our next game will be at the home of the Serrano team. Good luck to both the Freshmen and the JV teams. Keep up that team spirit and go for the win!

10/21/09 > French: The Language That We Love!

  This year SHHS is offering students the opportunity to take two languages, which are Spanish and French. In Spanish we have two different levels and in French there are three levels. Many students have taken a language before so they are fair when it comes to speaking either. Each student must take two years of a language to get into college, so you have to take it at one time or another.

On September 24th, the Silver Shield interviewed Mrs. Lisa Rae-Schiller, our very experienced French teacher. I asked her if she liked her job, she replied, "I so enjoy teaching French because I get to show my language and my culture to these young minds. All my students are so wonderful." Mrs. Schiller is originally from Canada, one of the many French-speaking countries of the world. She has been teaching since 1987, first in Canada and now in California.

  Mrs. Schiller experienced first-hand of what two educational systems are like both from different countries. In Canada, classes are often a semester long and you switch the class with a different one at the end of that semester. Teachers would usually teach 3 or 4 classes a day with twenty or thirty students because of the semester system. Mrs. Schiller decided to teach at SHHS because we needed a French teacher. When the time came, Mrs. Schiller answered the call of responsibility and greatness. She loves this faculty and the students because it's a new start and a new chance to make many relationships with her extraordinary students and staff.

  Although Mrs. Schiller is a French teacher, she also has many interests in other subjects concerning the arts. She loves art and can play the piano. She may be talented, but teaching the French language and culture is still her primary concern.

   If you would like to learn a new language and experience a new knowledge of a culture then be sure to sign up for French with Mrs. Schiller when the elective choices come around later in the year. This is a great way to enable you for college and have a fun experience with one of our most talented teachers on campus.

Shadow Hills students who are interested in tyring out for the position of the The Silver Knight Mascot, tryouts will take place during cheer practice TODAY.Please stop by and learn the tryout material with our SHHS cheerleaders. PEER MEDIATION TRAINING APPLICATION

Shadow Hills High School is now accepting applications for Peer Mediators.
As a peer mediator students will be trained in proper procedures for handling
conflicts, decision making, communication skills, problem solving and critical
thinking skills. Peer Mediators will help students who are in conflict listen to
each other’s point of view, focus on the problem, and create their own solutions.

All Peer Mediator candidates will be required to complete ten (10) hours of
training. Trainings will be conducted by professionals from the Community
Action Partnership of Riverside County’s Dispute Resolution Center.

Cross Country is still looking for a few good runners. We are competing against Xavier Prep today (9/10/09) and Palm Springs (9/12/09). There is still time to get your clearance from the Athletic Director (Mr. Shipley) and be out in time for our next meet on September 23rd. We need both boys and girls. Practice starts at 2:52p.m. Monday-Friday. We meet at the Stadium. If you have any questions just ask Mr. Lacy at Narrowvlly@dc.rr.com or talk to Mr. Smith in the counseling office.
