Dr Reynaldo J Carreon, Jr
2004-2005 Dr Carreon’s Dream It was the fondest dream of Dr Reynaldo J Carreon, Jr., a noted Hispanic ophthalmologist from Indio for whom our school is named, that students of all racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds should have opportunities to become interested in and prepare themselves for science, health and medical careers. Dr Carreon Academy, located conveniently across the street from John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital, represents a first step toward fulfillment of that dream in the Desert Sands communities. The school was built with the specific idea in mind that it would be converted to a technology-rich and medical-science magnet school. This is the first stage in a thematically unified continuum stretching to high school graduation. Dr. Reynaldo J Carreon Jr Academy opened its doors September 6, 2003. We have a beautiful new campus and great plans for the Carreon Comets. Rey and Carrie are very excited that we were able to have our Federal Magnet grant accepted by the committee in Washington D.C. The grant is funded for three years beginning with the 2004-2005 school year. Our emphasis is Pre-Med Sciences and Technology. Academic Excellence The Dr Carreon Academy staff believes that core academic skills—without which students would be at a disadvantage—could not be neglected. We realize that the thematic approaches used to instruct the students in Pre-Med science content will contribute to the development of basic educational skills, just as core academic skills will contribute to mastery of thematic content. To further enhance the learning of students the staff will engage in: Polite Child Program, which encompasses activities to develop strong communication and interpersonal skills. Aggressive use of technology to access information and share work. Acquisition of group-processing skills as an outcome of use of the inquiry method. Opportunities to collaborate with Dr Carreon Academy’s community partners. Curriculum Development for the area of Pre-Med and Health Sciences.
