Washington  Charter  School is located in the heart of Palm Desert, California. We have the distinction of being a California  Distinguished Elementary School and operate as a Charter School under the umbrella of Desert Sands Unified School District .  A close working relationship with the school district has afforded us the ability to break new ground and set high standards as a model for successful education. The school petitioned Desert Sands Board of Education in the spring of 1994 to become a charter school. The charter was approved by our local governing board and the state board of education in the summer of 1994.  Since that time we have operated a very successful public charter school. Our charter has been successfully renewed on four occasions.  Our most recent renewal in June 2011.  Our charter is in place until August 1, 2016.  Washington is a model charter school that has been recognized locally, statewide and nationally.

The Fine Arts have always graced our campus in the form of murals, statues and tile walls that give our school that cozy feeling. These have been erected or painted by our families and teachers supported by the community.  The sounds of music can be heard throughout the day as the only full time District Music teacher prepares our students to be comfortable on stage dancing, singing, acting or playing an instrument.

We occupy a state of the art facility that was modernized during the 2005-2006 school year.  As the school opened it's doors for the 2006-2007 school year our dreams became reality.  The school site has 2 two story classroom buildings.  Additionally we have a library, administration building, multi-use room and food service area.  Our square footage has almost doubled after the modernization project was completed.  To enhance learning and teaching classrooms have updated technology, climate controlled classrooms, energy efficient lighting and small teaching areas between classrooms.

The city of Palm Desert has always supported our efforts to make a difference in education.  The Mayor attends school functions throughout the year including our fifth grade honor and effort roll assemblies.

We are also fortunate to have a city park as our playground.  During the day it is part of our school and after school hours our campus is closed off and the playground becomes a park for the local community .  The vision of many of our parent volunteers is evident with our campus gardens where the students learn first hand how our food is grown.

Student achievement is the conerstone of our charter with a balanced educational program, dedicated parents, hard working students and staff that is simply AMAZING Washington Charter School students continue to excel academically.
