La Quinta High School Graduation Requirements

Each year students take what are called "core" classes. These classes are required for every student who receives a diploma from the Desert Sands Unified School District. To graduate, students need 220 total credits. In addition, students must also pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).


The required classes are as follows:


Social Studies:
3 years (30 credits)

  • 10th gr. - World History (one year)
  • 11th gr. - U.S. History (one year)
  • 12th gr. - Government/Economics (one year)

English: 4 years (40 credits)

  • English I
  • English II
  • English III
  • English IV

Math:  3 years, (30 credits) 

  • Algebra I
  • Geometry
  • Other

Science: 2 years (20 credits)

  • one year of life science (biology, anatomy/physiology)
  • one year of physical science (geology, chemistry, physics)

Fine Art or Foreign Language: 1 year (10 credits)

  • one full year of the same visual or performing art or one full year of a foreign language

Physical Education: 2 years (20 credits)

Electives: (70 credits or as many elective credit you need to meet the 220 total credits)


Course remediation may be completed during the school day if students' schedules permit.  Summer school may be an option depending on availability.  If not, outside coursework at parents' expense may be an option. There are specific criteria for such programs.  Full information and the required application are available through your student's counselor.
