Many health professionals never come into contact with patients. In any hospital there are dozens, perhaps hundreds of employees that do not deal directly with patients. They handle billing, purchasing, warehouse orders, insurance, social work, administrative duties, cafeteria work, health and safety, custodial services, etc. In this unit we've tried to shed a little light on some of these. Language Arts has some ordering, recall, and business issues as well as a focus on advertising. Science has students assuming the role of CEO's and deciding which product to produce and which advertising strategies to use. In history classes students will examine the transformation of the health professions from quacks with little scientifc knowledge to the development of modern medicine, and nurses, respectful treatment of mentally ill patients, clean air and water in the cities, and government intervention to inspect food and drugs and protect the health and welfare of all Americans.
