Dear Students, Parents, and all Visitors:

Welcome to Mrs. Becker's Website!

For the 2014-2015 school year, I will be teaching World History Honors as well as IB History of the Americas.  I feel very fortunate to have the privilege of teaching these courses at La Quinta High School, the best high school in the tri-valley area!

I began my teaching career in 2003 right here at La Quinta High. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agronomy from The University of Arizona (Go Cats!).  I have also held various job positions with companies in several different industries, including:

  • Seed Analyst in a seed laboratory (Imperial County);
  • Marketing/Accounting/Investor Relations in Computer Technology (Orange County);
  • Operations/Marketing in Biotechnology (San Diego);
  • Convention Services Manager/Food and Beverage Division in Hotel and Resort Management Industry (San Francisco Bay Area)

I am a fourth generation Californian and I have roots in the desert: my grandmother graduated from Coachella Valley Union High School (as it was called in 1939), and my mother was born in Mecca.  I graduated from Palo Verde High in Blythe where my parents and other family members still reside. My husband works in the farming industry and we have two children who attend LQHS.  We thoroughly enjoy what this desert community has to offer.

I hope you find the answers to all of your questions by using this website.  If you don't, feel free to contact me using the district website or at kelly.becker@desertsands.us

WELCOME TO ROOM 516 - HISTORY ROCKS!

World History Honors Classes (201-2015):  On the first day of school, be ready to take the test on the summer assignment and have your essay prepared and ready to turn in using the format on the instruction sheet. It is NOT NECESSARY to have a fancy plastic cover, binder, etc.  Please just turn it in nicely and neatly stapled.  Additionally, compose your answers to the bookwork questions on a separate piece of paper. Nothing fancy; just make sure your answers to the multiple choice or matching are listed by letter and not written out.  This makes it easier to grade!

Summer Assignment materials and instructions are posted on the LQHS School Website.  Please do not hesitate to order the required textbook!  The publisher carries the book (see link below) and it is in stock.  As an alternative, if you know someone who took this course in either of the previous two years, you may inquire as to whether they would be willing to sell you their used textbook at a discounted price.

Class Supplies:

3" Notebook Binder

(12) Tabbed Index Dividers - Pockets optional

Highlighter

Black or Blue Pen - no other colors allowed for essay writing

Pencil

Loose leaf paper; no spiral-bound notebook paper, please

Texbook Requirements:

Essential World History by Henry Brun

Amsco Publishers http://www.amscopub.com/

ISBN:  1-56765-636-6

Due to budgetary constraints, students will not have the convenience of purchasing textbooks from LQHS when school starts; students must purchase their own textbooks directly from the publisher (listed above) or other internet textbook vendors.  Some have used textbooks at a reduced price.

Again:  Please do not delay acquiring a copy of the textbook, not only for the summer assignment, but also for the class.  Textbooks are required by 9/10/2014 for the 2014 - 2015 school year.

For IB History of the Americas:  Please retain your copy of Newman from AP US History.  You will also need black and blue ink pens and a 3' binder with 6 tabs.  There will be a summer assignment due on the first day of class for the 2014-2015 school year.

Can't wait to see you again!
